Bharatpur. Mustard fields and the hero and heroine romancing in them are popular scenes in Bollywood films. The entire scenario of the film is of Punjab. Mustard greens and corn bread are also the identity of Punjab. That’s why it seems Punjab is the mustard state. Whereas mustard is produced the most in Rajasthan. Rajasthan is supplying half the mustard of the entire country.

The most commonly used edible oil in North India and Northeast India is mustard. It is cultivated extensively in Rajasthan. Bharatpur is the largest producing area in the entire state.

Rajasthan leads in mustard production
Half of India’s mustard production comes from Rajasthan. And in this too, 48 percent of India’s mustard production is in Bharatpur alone. The main reason for this is the pH value of the land here, which is considered best for mustard due to its mild alkaline nature. This is the reason why there are modern mills here to extract mustard oil. Their specialty is that while extracting oil, the nutrients of mustard are not destroyed.

Bharatpur is at the forefront
Agriculture Department Assistant Director Suresh Gupta informed that mustard is sown in about three and a half lakh hectares in Bharatpur district. This is also the main basis of livelihood of the farmers here. In view of the mustard production of the region, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, an institute of the Government of India, has established the National Mustard Research Center in 1993 at Sewar near Bharatpur.

profitable harvest
This research center of Bharatpur has prepared new varieties of mustard. Now farmers are being asked to sow them. Farmers are being taught new farming techniques. The average production of mustard is 21 quintals per hectare. Being a very profitable crop, last year farmers got more profit from mustard as compared to other crops.
